Beginners Guide to Kata Kihon

Your Instructor or Grading Examiner will normally ask you which Kata you are about to perform.
When you are asked, there is a procedure you must follow, whatever Kata it is you are doing. This is:

1.Yoi. Cross your arms in front of your chest finishing with both arms in front of you, hands made into fists at waist height.

2.Bow. Bring your Right foot into your Left foot, feet together, and bring your open hands to either side of your body. Low Bow bending from the waist

3.Yoi. Raise your self up from the Bow and move your Right foot out away from your Left foot (Shoulder width apart) into ready position. Repeat the first Yoi.

4.Say the name of your Kata loudly and confidently but do not shout.
In this case say "Kata Kihon Sensei"

The instructor will then ask you to begin.

1.Look to your Left.

2.Step to your Left into Front Stance with a Downward Block with your Left fist. Make sure your Right fist is pulled back on your Right hip.

3.Step forward with your Right foot into Front Stance and punch with your Right fist to chest height. Left fist on Left hip.
Please note that each with each of the following moves, the fist that is not doing a technique must be pulled back onto its relative hip.

4.Look over your Right Shoulder.

5.Pull your Right foot back in towards your Left foot and carry it on past your Left foot to your Right side, finishing in a wide Front Stance. Make a Downward Block with your Right fist.

6.Step forward with your Left foot into Front Stance and punch with your Left fist to chest height.

7.Turn your head to your Left so you are facing the way you started the Kata.

8.Pull your Left foot back in towards your Right foot, then step forward with your Left foot in the direction you were facing at the start of the Kata, finishing in a wide Front Stance. Make a Downward Block with your Left fist.


9.Step forward with your Right foot into Front Stance and punch with your Right fist to chest height

10.Step forward with your Left foot into Front Stance and punch with your Left fist to chest height

11.Step forward with your Right foot into Front Stance and punch with your Right fist to chest height. KIAI as you punch. The KIAI should be loud, short and confident.

12.Pull your Left foot in towards the Right side of your Right foot. Pivot on your Right foot and start to turn your Left shoulder around in an anticlockwise direction until you are facing to your Right. Carry on the movement of your Left foot past the Right side of your Right foot finishing in Front Stance with a Downward Block with your Left fist.

13.Step forward with your Right foot into Front Stance and punch with your Right fist to chest height.
Look over your Right Shoulder.

14.Pull your Right foot back in towards your Left foot and carry it on past your Left foot to your Right side, finishing in a wide Front Stance. Make a Downward Block with your Right fist.

15.Step forward with your Left foot into Front Stance and punch with your Left fist to chest height.

16.Turn your head to your Left so you are facing the towards the starting point of the Kata.

17.Pull your Left foot back in towards your Right foot, then step forward with your Left foot towards the start point of the Kata, finishing in a wide Front Stance. Make a Downward Block with your Left fist.

18.Step forward with your Right foot into Front Stance and punch with your Right fist to chest height

19.Step forward with your Left foot into Front Stance and punch with your Left fist to chest height

20.Step forward with your Right foot into Front Stance and punch with your Right fist to chest height. KIAI as you punch. The KIAI should be loud, short and confident.

21.Pull your Left foot in towards the Right side of your Right foot. Pivot on your Right foot and start to turn your Left shoulder around in an anticlockwise direction until you are facing to your Right. Carry on the movement of your Left foot past the Right side of your Right foot finishing in Front Stance with a Downward Block with your Left fist.



N.B. This and the next 3 moves are there same as at the start of the Kata

22.Step forward with your Right foot into Front Stance and punch with your Right fist to chest height.
Look over your Right Shoulder.

23.Pull your Right foot back in towards your Left foot and carry it on past your Left foot to your Right side, finishing in a wide Front Stance. Make a Downward Block with your Right fist.

24.Step forward with your Left foot into Front Stance and punch with your Left fist to chest height.

Hold this final position until you here the Instructor / Grading Examiner say "Yamae"

Bring your Right foot back into your Left and repeat Stages 1 - 3 of the introduction to your Kata
